Introduction

So, on February 17, 2024, I attended the “Welcoming Day” for new members at Swayanaka Jakarta—a non-profit organization focused on helping and improving children's well-being. The event was held at Tebet Eco Park at 10:00 AM, and I was super thrilled (and a little nervous) to meet my new teammates for the year ahead.

How I Got There

To reach the park, I took the Transjakarta bus from the Puri Beta 2 bus stop. Since it was one of my first times using Transjakarta, my older sister kindly went along to accompany me. The trip was estimated to take around 50 minutes without traffic, so we decided to leave at 8:50 AM to avoid the chance of being late. We hopped on Bus No. 13 going towards Tegal Mampang, then switched to Bus No. 4K at Pasar Santa, which would take us directly to Tebet Eco Park bus stop.

As we traveled, I felt excited thinking about meeting the people I’d be working with for the next year. After a long but enjoyable trip, we arrived at the park, and I found the meeting spot where the event was set to start. After a quick goodbye to my sister, who had other plans, I was ready to jump into the new experience.

What I Did There (The Activity)

When I got there, a few people were already there, including some old members and other newcomers like me. We sat in a circle on mats, with lots of trees around us, which felt peaceful. I felt a bit shy at first, but I started talking and introducing myself to the members beside me. I asked friendly questions like where they were from and which division they were in, and soon enough, I found out that a few of them lived near me. We even planned to go home together after the event.

At 10:00 AM, the old members started the session with a warm welcome speech, followed by an introduction session paired with fun games. These ice-breaking activities really helped us feel comfortable and get to know each other better. We laughed, shared stories, and talked about our motivations for joining Swayanaka Jakarta. Through these conversations, I discovered that I was the youngest in the group, which felt like a special position to be in.

After the games, we each wrote down our goals for the year on sticky notes, which we’ll read again at the end of the term.

Then we had lunch together, took a moment to pray, and finished up with a group photo—just like the one you see in the header of this blog! As we said goodbye, I left with my new friends, and we took the Transjakarta bus back home, just as we had planned earlier.

What I Learned

Through that experience of joining a new organization, I learned how valuable and important it was to step out of my comfort zone to interact with new people. Those first few friendly questions led to meaningful conversations, and I realized how important small efforts were in creating bonds. I also saw how group games and simple activities could break any awkwardness and build a strong sense of team spirit.

Conclusion

My first day with Swayanaka Jakarta was a memorable and wonderful start to a journey with people who shared a commitment to making a difference. Starting something new, especially in an unfamiliar environment, could be challenging but incredibly rewarding. Meeting new people, learning from them, and stepping out of my comfort zone gave me a fresh perspective on building connections.

From my story, I’d like to share a few tips and tricks that might help you if you want to join a new organization or attend a similar experience. Here are some ways to make your time more enjoyable and to help you connect with new people.

Tips and Trick for Attending Events with Public Transportation 🚆🚍

  • Plan Your Route: Use navigation apps on your phone, like Google Maps, and leave a bit early to avoid delays. It’s always better to have extra time than to feel rushed.
  • Know Your Transfers: If you have to change buses, make sure to identify the stops in advance to avoid any confusion during your trip.
  • Bring Essentials: Bring along a small water bottle, a snack, and a phone charger to stay prepared in case of any unexpected delays.

Tips and Trick for Attending Events for Connecting with New People 👥

  • Start with Simple Questions: Starting a conversation can be as easy as asking where someone is from or what hobbies they enjoy. These simple questions are easy to answer and can reveal common interests.
  • Share Something About Yourself: Sharing a little detail about yourself, like where you're from or what brought you there, can make others feel comfortable opening up in return.
  • Be Open and Curious: Showing genuine interest in other people’s stories and experiences can help build connections quickly and make conversations enjoyable.
